Just here to say that the world is a better place with you in it. Thanks for making me smile when so much of my time is spent thinking about the world being on fire. And then I spiral... Is it bad for me to find joy when so many are suffering and living in fear and when our country is threatening to attack another country???

Your writing introduced me to the phrase "hurting your own feelings" and it is a concept I didn't even realize I needed articulated. Thank you! and apologies to my children who likely do not appreciate when I keep telling them to stop doing it.

p.s. if you need something bright in these dark days, I recommend these passion fruit bars. And if you really need a project, order fresh passion fruits from some far-flung place, and then make your own passion fruit curd (definitely an unnecessary but enjoyable step) https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/passion-fruit-bars-recipe

I'm praying for our country, praying for our roof to hold up this weekend, praying we don't lose power since it's already 50° in my kitchen with the heat functioning, praying for people who are afraid to leave their homes because they don't know whether they'll return, praying our government pulls back from the brink and also turns their laser focus of hatred off our trans kids. I hope someone up there is hearing my confused, interfaith, sort of agnostic prayers.

As sad as I am about my 25yo having broken up with their lovely girlfriend last summer, I am more grateful than I can say that it resulted in their moving home to NY from Minneapolis. I know they would be out on the ramparts the way they were in the 2020 BLM protests in Boston, and I would be terrified, and also awed by their courage, like I was then.

We went to Trader Joe's today and it was utter chaos, but I do love shopping with my kid (either kid, or both, but the 22yo is braving her own chaos at her supermarket job today).

I'm going to be making my late mom's beef and vegetable soup this weekend, along with your popovers and gingerbread from the old food blog. Unless we lose power, in which case I'll just make the soup, maybe with savory pancakes on the side. (Thankfully, we have a gas cooktop.)

Stay warm, stay safe, stay angry, and stay hopeful, friend.

Forgive the rambling. I am overfull of emotion right now.

Always feel more tethered to...can't say reality exactly, but life in all its beauties and impossibilities when I read your missives. (What kind of salads with celery -like celery, parm & pine nuts? I think I do remember one of your celery-heavy recipe from years ago.) Thank you Catherine.

Not sure if you've heard of an internet interview show called Subway Takes, but I was watching a recent one and your book Sandwich made a guest appearance! Thought you should know because it fits in perfectly with what the guest and host were talking about: https://youtube.com/shorts/BLK2Nbl-YNo?si=rzobTm8cD2kYOaBI

OMG *love* Heated Rivalry! Just the sweet, spicy, engaging thing I needed during our shithole country experience (and by that I mean our president, ICE, etc. -- trying to separate him from our country). Would love to hear more of your thoughts and/or favorite heated rivalry links... xxoo

I’m very excited to be coming to the London event. There’s not much that will get me across london on a Monday in February but you have earned that accolade!

Oh my gosh; thank you for putting this energy out into the world! I need reminding of real life: cats, books, snow, PAUSING, interesting minds, and salad. I have all those things in my life, but your iterations look more interesting 😂. Thank you, and carry on!
