We love crokinole here in New Brunswick, Canada. Growing up every home had a beautiful handmade crokinole board (made locally by talented woodworkers) and there were even crokinole parties/tournaments for special occasions. I think it originated in Ontario. My favourite memory of childhood is when the power would go out my dad would always play crokinole with us. (In rereading this post I feel like you might think I am an ancient person describing my childhood when actually I am 57 😂).
It's a hard summer in so many ways. But, tonight we're seeing Jaws on the big screen with all three of our adult sons and Friday they're taking me to Red Rocks to hear the Avett Brothers. All five of us: this is no small miracle. So life is also sorta, momentarily, perfect but not as perfect as Whistler. Nothing is. Love you and wish I could eat all your pickled dishes!
“They’re great to round out a meal that you know secretly isn’t really a meal (e.g. a Strawberry Shortcake ice-cream bar)” —— this is my kind of summer meal! 🤌🤌
Thank you for your salad inspiration. We've had a milder summer than usual where I live (Sorry Heat Domers! Normally we are on fire, so I'm taking goodness where I can get it.) but I still want salads in the summer and just cold things in general. We have been doing lots of gf cracker + goat cheese + fruit + herbs (and sometimes salami or prosciutto) with a salad meals and it has been good, but i need some new things to try.
Back up a second, Catherine. Would the Grand Canyon trip be the one previously discussed, exceptionally manly and without a cell phone? Were you hoping to slip that past us?!? 😉
I did read Whistler and loved it …. So easy to get into. And I just finished Sandwich and Wreck - both recommended by my DIL … who relates to the menopause and the sandwich generation. However I laughed and laughed…. Relating to the olders.
It is...hard, that is...the summer. Not writing about it until "its" blessedly over. The recipes look yummy. Whistler was indeed the perfect novel. Can't get it out of my head. Wow, you sure did come up against a boatload of fears. Congrats to you! Thank you for the chuckles. Love your writing- and your politics!
I love this list of salads! We have a tiny rice cooker for my teen boys to meal prep for their school lunches. I just found out I can make quinoa in it, and it's a game changer. We're coming and going so often at home, and it's so nice to just turn the rice cooker on and let it do its job.
Can’t wait to learn more about your Grand Canyon odyssey. And to read whatever you write. And to read Whistler. I’m number 178 on the local library book hold list so it will be a while. Perhaps I’ll splurge and buy it. I have lots of reading time this summer, sidelined with a broken ankle. Whaa.
What an absolute shocker that my life quote is a Catherine Newman joint:
I realize there’s a theme here, and the theme is vinegar.
This will be framed on my kitchen wall.
Oh Catherine I just love reading your brain!!! It feels familiar 🩷
I came here to say exactly this. ❤️

They make a giant one on the ice in winter in Winnipeg!
!!!
Hi! I just finished Wreck and instantly want to read it again.
Thank you, Cheryl!
No to bats. Yes to strawberry shortcake ice cream bars. I have had 5 in 3 days.
Perfect!

Oh our mutual fear of the norovirus or any barfing at all. So happy you epic trip was barf free!
