Is White Whine Vinegar a typo or clever commentary on the current vibe in America? Either way, thanks for the bonus chickpeas!

Ha ha ha ha! Omg.

I almost made the same comment. Hahaha

I can’t tell you how reading you these past years has completely transformed my relationship with chickpeas. Honestly, I used to think of them as little pockets of dirt masquerading as food. Now? I’m sautéing them in a bloop of olive oil (your word, forever mine), splashing in some white “whine” vinegar, and tossing them with feta, toasted almonds, dried cherries, and other bits of edible fabulousness. I am a changed woman because of you. 😂 Chickpeas, too.

I just listened to the two-part Pee-Wee episode on the podcast "You're Wrong About," which Jamie co-hosted, and now I've taken her book out of the library and can't wait to read it! Also to watch that documentary. I was a kid vacationing in Sarasota at the time Paul was arrested, and I just remember the feeling of shame I felt that someone I loved so much would do dirty things in a porn theatre (shock! gasp!) Which of course, is not even what likely happened, and even if he did, like...good for him?? I was raised in a sexually restrictive and strongly homophobic culture and I'm only beginning to unwrap all of that now, and I wept along with Jamie while hearing her speak of her love for Paul. He didn't deserve any of that.

The documentary was perfect and heartbreaking. I watched so much PeeWee as a kid and my mom was obsessed with his humor. She was sad when he was arrested but never turned on him, which said a lot for a boomer mom in the 80s. We got her a cameo from Paul Reubens about five years ago and it is an actual TREASURE.

I can't remember exactly what my parents said to me, but I know it was presented in a way that was dirty/shameful. I walked around for years thinking he was a "bad man." Bravo to your mom!! I was very encouraged when I heard people had protested outside the studio when they decided to pull re-runs of Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

Thank you for the reminder and quick guide on how easy it is to be politically involved, how it truly is our duty as Americans to remind our reps what we need.

Thank you for adding the call to action. The genocide and occupation must end.

Hamas is still holding over 50 hostages for ransom in their terror tunnels underneath Gaza. We (and all the Gazan people) know any hunger will stop once Hamas puts down their arms and releases the hostages. Why aren’t you calling for that first?

Perhaps as part of your political call to action, a call for freeing the Israeli hostages should be part of the message? If your goal is embracing the humanitarian needs of the people of Israel and of Palestine that seems pretty central ...

I just heard about The Salt Stones this week at my local bookstore (I'm in Vermont!), and then I saw this, kismet! I must read it.

Second! I made this salad-- I am NOT a salad person, but you piqued my interest, and I had some leftover salad from the holidays to use up. I LOVED it. I used crumbled tofu instead of feta, and it soaked up all the yummy dressing, perfection. The pan-seared chickpeas add the best flavor and texture-- brilliant. Thank you, so very much!

I read AND LOVED Sandwich this summer. So looking forward to reading Wreck this fall. I will purchase it from one of *the many* independent bookstores we have in Seattle. Also, I grieve your absence every time I pick up an issue of Real Simple. The current contributor is painfully unsuited for the position. I will leave it at that. Wish you were there.

If you loved James Herriot and H is For Hawk, you should also read The Shepherd's Life: Modern Dispatches from an Ancient Landscape by James Rebanks! It's a gorgeous memoir that I devoured in a day or two at a lovely vacation rental in the Berkshires that had a fabulous bookshelf.
