Oh, we know that game as Celebrity! It's such a good multi-gen game, though at one fire-pit version during the worst of Covid, we had to expressly forbid the teens from using YouTubers/TikTokers. Tokkers??
Oh, yes - crucial difference. And we often make a rule that you have to be pretty sure that at least X number of other people in the room who AREN'T IN YOUR GENERATION would know the person.
We also call this Celebrity and only use peoples’ names. I love it so much - basically spent my 20’s hosting game nights where we played this instead of going out. I haven’t played it in years tho!
I LOVE both of these ideas!!! I think my fam will still life with a persimmon, as my parents are totally obsessed with their tree and the bounty they harvested this year. In short, the subject line of your newsletter grossly undersells what lies within. THANK YOU!!
My cousin taught us all a version of telestration one New Year’s Eve. We still play it. Only difference is you make up your own phrases. Happy Thanksgiving
There’s a version of this game you can buy called Monikers that is different enough from the home grown version (which we also play) to make it worthwhile. Really fun.
The pre-dinner table drawing was a huge hit (my artistry is in food, but even I had fun sketching satsumas:). Thank you for the new Thanksgiving tradition!
There is an optional fourth round to Fishbowl which is Charades Under A Sheet. It's exactly what it sounds like
Wait. What? This doesn't sound like . . . something I can picture. A sheet over you like a Halloween ghost costume? What?
yes, exactly.
more optional additional rounds (though Charades Under a Sheet is the best!!!):
- only sounds
- only facial expressions
These made me lol
Yes! We also do charades but you're sitting on your hands 🤣
I must try this! Easier to enforce than the "only facial expressions" version
came here to say exactly this! super fun
(and i say that as an introvert that normally hates games)

Ha ha ha! Oh, do you do it with only people?

Such fun traditions! Thanks for sharing (not spam at all ❤️)

Thank you so much, Nora! xo
jeepers how effin privileged
sigh
I wonder if the person who commented this realizes that they do not, in fact, have to read your Substack. Hugs.
mine is better
I am spending way too much time poring over your post trying to figure out what exactly is privileged about it. I LOVED it.

Yes, this really does seem like a game that doesn't require the game itself. Just a foldy piece of paper, right? Hi, dear MAGold!
I want to be at that table! You sound like so much fun, but get back to WHISKING THE FUCKING GRAVY!
We call this game Naked! Dunno why. Such a fun one at holiday gatherings!
Want to try them all. 😎

jeepers how effin wonderful.
Happy Thanksgiving, Catherine! We love you!
Love these ideas! We’ve played fishbowl for years but never called it that- I don’t know what we called it- the “game”? But it’s a fun one.
Yes ! Love monikers!
