I love this newsletter because Catherine does everything "newmanly possible*" to make my life more joyful. And as always, (always being the eight weeks or so I've been a subscriber) I am going to do exactly what Catherine suggests. (I've made the mashed potatoes, bought the playdoh pizza set, and got two sets of paint chips for the RoyGBiv game). I do regret though, I threw out my 15 year old bottle of molasses 10 years ago.
I am going to be the controversial voice and say YES, make the cookies! (Spoken by the person who LOATHES almond flavoring/marzipan/&c. and thinks it tastes like pink gas station bathroom hand soap smells.)
I barely remember it because I had toddlers then, but I made this when you first posted it! And never made it since! Which definitely tracks. So I'm going to make it again, and as I remember, it was perfect with some (a lot of) whipped cream on top.
ETA: I checked the date and I was 100000 months pregnant with my second baby then. No wonder I have no memory! Thank you.
We have been making this recipe for many years (since the old blog!) and my kids and I adore it. Also, chai cake sounds amazing and now I want to make it.
My grandmother served gingerbread with either warm applesauce or Fannie Farmer's lemon sauce. Maybe the lemon sauce is too challenging? But it's my favorite.
Yes! I tried to shortcut this recently by serving gingerbread with some lemon curd and it was just too much of a muchness. That lemon sauce deserves its day in the sun, too!
Oh my gosh- make the thumbprint cookies linked in the recipe that the author made last year. Also- I love you. I do need so much comfort. Thank you for all that your writing brings. A million thank yous
This looks delicious, as do the cookies, and if I weren't so lazy (wait - did I mention that before?!), I might actually make them. Do you think I could sub coconut sugar for the white sugar? Anyway. Maybe one day.
I could read your writing every day until the day I die and never, ever get sick of it.
(Don't make those cookies.)
Ha ha ha, Luisa! I love you so much. Okay. I *did* make them? Just now? And they're not as good as almond. I mean, duh. But they're good!
I'm glad to know someone else uses "JFC" also.
ha ha ha!

*very proud of that one.
Very good, Cathy. *Very* good. xxoo
No matter what happens in my day, I will have a smile on my face any time I remember your countertop nativity scene! ;)
Ha ha ha! Thank you for appreciating that, dear Oona.

Ha ha ha! Stay tuned for my note on this topic.

Ha ha ha! It's that 100 thousandth month that really gets you.
I agree, no to the cookies. Regular amaretti instead.
Agree

What Luisa said! About your writing and those cookies :)
Too late, ha ha ha!

Does the recipe here look right? https://www.eatdarlingeat.net/post/gingerbread-with-lemon-sauce
It looks pretty close! Here's the original: https://www.familycookbookproject.com/recipe/2608663/hot-lemon-sauce.html
At least, I think this is the original! I'll have to check my mom's cookbook to make 100% sure!
Oh that sounds lovely!

Yes, same!
Ooooohhhh. Make the cookies!! I feel like I’m gonna need to make them, too. Gingerbread anything is my love language.
Okay, I made them! Stay tuned for the note. . .

Oh, thank you, dear Jamie!
Gah. Yum!
Make the cookies! Call them gingerbread crinkles instead of amaretti :)
Good idea!
I don't think you should make the cookies... this cake looks like no other gingerbread recipe is ever needed again... I can't wait to bake it!
Thank you Catherine!

I do think you could!
