I love that I just accepted the blurry recipe with no question, squinting aggressively, certain that it would be worth deciphering on my own because you shared it. And then you translated it if I just scrolled a tiny bit further. 😆
Before I scrolled down I knew that if she did not include the recipe I would just forgo the remainder of my day's plans to decipher the Blurry Text Image and make the wonder sauce.
I love this blurry recipe. When I was 23 and living in NY and had roughly $12 to my name, one of my hobbies was checking out cookbooks from the library and scanning in pages that looked tasty. I recently found my long lost scan file on an old hard drive and absolutely none of the scans are straight and half disappear right into the fold, and it’s still a perfect memory of that time 🙂
This story reminds me of the time my toddler got into my allergy medicine (how?!) and I called poison control (while meticulously counting how many pills of the 250-count bottle remained, naturally), and she told me if I thought he ate less than 30 pills then I had nothing to worry about. THIRTY PILLS. I will never forget that call, which ultimately reassured me that we have a lot less to worry about as mothers than we think we do!
So excited to make this sauce, and for your forthcoming book (not necessarily in that order!)
The first time I truly felt like a parent was when my 2 year old convinced the 5 yo neighbor girl to eat some stool softener. I still don’t know how she got them but they were pink and she had poured them into a little purse.
I only found out because the 5 yo was complaining about spicy candy she ate.
William Steig is so amazing. Somehow I didn't read Amos & Boris until my kid was little, but I still own my treasured childhood copy of Abel's Island my mom gave me for Christmas when I was 9 or 10. I made my husband read it during the pandemic when the libraries were closed and we needed comfort reading. Steig does so much so perfectly-yearning, joy, love, hilarity!
I ordered the book and I'm already planning my drinks, snacks, and ambience. I'm thinking hard cider with a fire going either on the patio or in the fireplace. Or maybe a rainy day/cup of tea situation. Anyway, thank you!
I think Amos and Boris might also be my favorite book? With strong competition from Abel's Island, also by William Steig, and from The Snail and the Whale, which is basically the exact same story as Amos and Boris only with a snail and more rhyming.
I have similar cat flower safety issues! Mine only really messes with my plants if he knows I'm in the room and wants my attention by being naughty, but he will often eat dead leaves, &c. if they are on the floor, so I never have super toxic flowers at home because I picture, like, tulips disintegrating and shedding petals everywhere and then the feline vacuum cleaner coming along and hoovering them up. Cats, man!
Will preorder your book assuming you can in the UK?
I picked up ‘The best we could hope for ‘ by Nicola Kraus - and saw it had a recommendation from you in the blurb (is that the right word?) and so I bought it- and I love it. Not quite finished but not what I expected at all- so happy I bought it. So much to ponder on. Anyway love these posts. Thank you.

I can totally picture this!
Your posts remind me of what really matters in life: books, good sauces, and laughing in the face of danger! Xo
Well said!!!

You must have been relieved for months. Years.

Ha ha ha! "she had poured them into a little purse."

I feel this exact way!
Stay gold, ponyboys…😭❤️🙌
Amos and Boris is an amazing book, a favorite in my house!
I love Amos and Boris! Even named my child after one of the characters.
But WHICH? I lobbied to name Ben Boris and was roundly dismissed.
Yes, which?! We are in suspense...

I love this vision boarding!
Oh, I need that sauce in my life asap
you totally do!
That recipe is definitely from the ATK universe (I recognize that font)
It is!!!!
What wonderful news that you wrote a new book! I preordered. And I’m wishing health to you and your mom.
Thank you so much. xo

I don't know the Snail and the Whale!
A Julia Donaldson–Axel Scheffler joint! (I have a tattoo of a snail and a whale in tribute.)

Ours is similar. Also bites the plasticky covers of library books for attention. Sigh. I guess I would too.
