Joan Armatrading! 😭😭😭 Every single one of those songs—know them all by heart! The beautiful, bittersweet soundtrack of my early, angstily romantic college years. Sigh.
Speaking of mocktails, can I recommend something that a friend brought last time he visited (I don't Not Drink, but I have a really low tolerance and don't drink much/often, so I am always interested in fun drinks that don't require me keeping bottles of booze around that I'll only use twice a year) -- Phony Negroni and Amaro Falso by St. Agrestis -- the Phony Negroni is a perfect bitters-y aperitif, and the Amaro Falso is kind of like a grown-up coke (or a non-alcoholic cynar & soda) ((even if I did email them to say that while Phony Negroni is pleasingly silly and fun to say, I think they should consider either re-naming or naming the next thing Fauxmaro, instead of Amara Falso)) (((yes, I am very annoying))). Anyway, they are really nice, and the glass bottles are lovely and the perfect size for bud vases later, but the cans are both less expensive _and_ not breakable.
I do love your Substack, and have just gulped down Impossible Things, have a week off next week and am looking forward to great big sandwichy bites. Didn’t realise you were in the UK last week and feel
If there is a newsletter, I always want it to be yours. Sandwich is being delivered tomorrow. So jealous of everyone able to meet you on your tour. I’m in Michigan :( Safe travels!
I just want to say a massive, enthusiastic CONGRATS on your English tour and the upcoming US Sandwich release. I have been traveling and/or online-quiet for much of the last couple months, but I have been silently cheering you as I saw your ecstatic tour pics. Your book deserves every glowing, adoring review, and every preorder.
Joan, who serenaded me through my twenties and beyond. She toured small colleges and we got to see her in intimate theaters. And I saw her in Providence in 1984. Joan and Providence, two disparate items in your Substack, but actually joined in the life of a sophomore at Connecticut College. She was super, as sexy and gorgeous as her voice. I remember girls throwing underwear on stage and Joan was very gracious about it.
Damn you the send button. Anyway, sad I missed you in London, hope you had a blast at. TCR with Jenny Colgan 😍 and also glad you had the one week in the last 9 months in London that hasn’t rained. Also kitten in a bag!
Joan!!! I’m so jealous of people who don’t know her music yet — you have so much to enjoy. Your heart is going to explode when you hear the bass singer in “Love & Affection” go “Oh baby.” Nothing better than playing that song in a car and singing along and getting teary when the strings come in.
Oh wow, got here via a link from Platonic Love and immediately realized you’re the author of my latest Parnassus Books First Edition Club book! Hello! Just started reading Sandwich and I’m loving it!
I am reading Sandwich now and I cannot tell you the number of times I have laughed out loud! My kids are little but I already feel time slipping through my fingers, and you just hit the nail on the head about so many aspects of motherhood/womanhood/life. Recommending this to many friends!
Made Hot Virgins (with a little name change) as the signature cocktail at my daughter's high school graduation party this week: huge hit. Thank you so much!

Sigh.
Upset that there is no chickpea content but I’m gonna read Sandwich anyway.
Ha ha ha!

Ha ha ha! Gracious is the right way to be if someone tosses you their underpants!

Joan Armatrading is my fav. Makes me weep! I am so sorry I will miss you on Sept 14 in Providence!
I DID wonder where you were! With sad searching inbox eyes. And I ❤️ that early Joan Armatrading, too.
